The title I'd like for my story is "Positive Defiance."
My childhood was challenging. My father, God rest his soul, discovered a month after I was born that the left side of my body was essentially "lifeless," while my right side was vibrant and full of energy. When I imagine myself at that time, I see a bright, happy side that loves life, and a silent, gray side without vitality. Thus began my long journey of treatment. As I write this now, in my youth, I remember my first step at age five as if it were a scene from a movie, with every detail—like the doctor smiling and calling me to step towards him. I smile with gratitude and say, "Thank God."
My story truly began after I graduated high school. I faced a choice: I could follow society's expectations and live as a girl with limited mobility, hidden from the world, or I could create my own path, completing my college education and pursuing success. God blessed me with a father who loved, supported, and stood by me in every way. I studied Computer Information Systems, earned certifications in web application programming, and continued to challenge myself.
A key part of my story involves my father. Despite his unwavering support, my life took a turn in 2022 when he was diagnosed with cancer and began chemotherapy. Before I continue, let me tell you about my father. He was my role model, a well-known construction professional, but one day he felt pain in his left leg. After visiting a doctor, he was diagnosed with diabetes and, unfortunately, gangrene in his foot, leading to an amputation below the knee. It was a devastating moment, but he didn't give up. He got a prosthetic leg and continued to support me, standing strong through every challenge.
In 2023, however, his illness had spread, and there was no longer hope for a cure. It seemed as if his final act of love was to help me become independent. For the first time, I traveled alone to another town to complete an internship. I was afraid, but he stayed in contact, encouraging me. He even suggested I get my driver’s license, which I passed on the first try. There were many moments of pride he shared with me, including my college graduation and passing the driving test. My father passed away in early 2024, and I thank God for every beautiful memory with him.
As for me, Mariana Algafy, I have made a significant recovery and am able to move and walk. This is where my story of defiance against reality truly begins. I earned a Bachelor’s in Computer Information Systems, a diploma in fashion design, and even started a small business from home. Today, I don't see myself as weak or disabled. On the contrary, I feel like a miracle, blessed with a beautiful smile. When people who don’t know my story meet me, I often hear, "Your name is unique, and your personality is wonderful." I think this is God's way of compensating for the hardships I endured as a child.
Let me tell you a bit about my project. I, Mariana Algafy, am the founder of a handmade embroidery business, creating embroidered bags, pouches, keychains, frames, and gifts for various occasions. I love what I do, and every item I make is filled with love. My dream is to become a global success story. I want to leave you with a quote I cherish: "You will not simply fade as long as you strive, attempt, and desire. You will become who you believe you can be."
